Sail Quinta d Lorde to Funchal, Madeira 30 July 2010

12.30 hrs 30 July we left Quinta do Lorde marina and had a good sail for an hour with just the Genny. After rounding a headland we lost the wind and had to motor the last 1 1/2 hours to Funchal. On the way we passed close to the runway of the Funchal airport - as there is very little flat ground on Madeira, they had to build half the runway on concrete pillars. The flight path, particularly when the wind has a westerly component, looks a bit tricky as the descent is in a steep curve over the foothills on the approach.

The marina at Funchal is crowded with local boats and commercial tourist boats - as visitor one is almost inevitably rafted up to another boat. The water looks dirty and the toilet/ shower facilities are unpleasant - and we at 39 euros a night, we are paying 30 percent more than in the superb facilities at Quinta do Lorde. However, on the plus side one is in the centre of the very picturesque capital of Madeira and there are frequent busses to all over the island with bus stops just a few minutes walk from the boat. Also the marina is very sheltered from the prevailing wind and has very little surge.
